I’m Losing My Edge
The flip side of success when your brand is angst
The Korn paradox
Bakersfield, California is one of the worst places you can live in California. Smells like horseshit. It’s sparsely populated but sprawls out for miles. There ain’t shit to do out there but fuck. You pay California taxes for the amenities of Ohio.
From out of this hell hole came one of the biggest bands of the late 90’s and 2000’s, Korn.
Korn was a bunch of meth head losers who jammed all day in their practice studio in Bakersfield. A band of misfit weirdos that rejected society because society rejected them first.
They practiced so much, they got good. Really good. They channeled their anger and frustration into art, allowing them to transcend the heavy metal genre and became their own genre. Nu metal.
That got the attention of a label. When their first album dropped there was nothing else like it.
“What about the Deftones?”
Shut the fuck up Danielle.
Korn’s first album made them stars. Their second album wasn’t as good as the first, but it was still great. The second album theme was Korn dealing with this unexpected newfound success.
