I DIDN’T DO IT
Who to Blame for the Palisades Fire
A native’s take on the fires in Los Angeles
Los Angeles is on fire. Again. Twice a decade, every decade. It’s the terror tax we pay for living in L.A. The land turns on us and makes us get a hotel room.
I’ve been ordered to evacuate 4 times and evacuated all 4. Our home was never in danger because we lived a few streets over from the edge of civilization. When your can’t see flames but a black plume is racing towards you so fast the smoke looks like a dragster exhaust, you leave.
There is no edge of civilization in the Pacific Palisades. There is no grid. It’s all mansions on stilts hanging off of cliffs or at the top of a hill. Wherever flat ground can be fabricated.
Functionally it’s a terrible place to build a home. There’s one road in and out, the ground is unstable and most homes are surrounded by dry, dead brush.
Who cares? Look at that view…
